Trenton Golden Hawks News

It may be hard to believe, considering the heat, but junior A hockey is just a couple weeks away from launching a new season, and the Trenton Golden Hawks are set to file their 2010-11 flight plan. Tim Clayden, Hawks' general manager and director of hockey operations, is optimistic the team, in its second full year of action, won't hit much turbulence. Team brass are figuring to get past the second round of the playoffs this year. Training camp is set to start Sunday, Aug. 15 with the first preseason game scheduled for Aug. 20 against the Welington Dukes. Thanks to a major realignment of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League, the Hawks find themselves playing in a tough East Division containing several traditional rivals. "Everybody has been saying that playing against Wellington, Cobourg, Peterborough, Lindsay and Kingston on a regular basis will bring back local junior hockey interest big time. That would be great and the timing couldn't be better," said Clayden. Timing may be of the essence, since the league will continue to reduce its numbers to possibly 24 for the 2011-12 season. The Hawks play the Voyageurs, Cobourg Cougars and the Dukes six times each — three home and three away fixtures. That's 18 games in a 50-game regular season. They will play the four other teams in the division — Pickering Panthers, Lindsay Muskies, Whitby Fury and Peterborough Stars — four times each, twice at home and twice on the road. The remaining 16 games will be home-and-home series versus the remaining eight teams in the South East Conference — St. Michael's Buzzers, Streetsville Derbys, Toronto Jr. Canadians, Vaughan Vipers, Upper Canada Patriots, North York Rangers, Dixie Beehives and Villanova Knights. Trenton opens the regular season at home Friday, Sept. 10 against the Voyageurs.

Officials with the Trenton Golden Hawks expect a competitive training camp, saying virtually all spots on the roster are open to players who can prove they belong. About 60 players are expected to lace up for the Hawks' conditioning camp, set to open Thursday, Aug. 12 at the Community Gardens. The main camp opens Sunday, Aug. 15. The Hawks will play 10 preseason games. They start the preseason with three games in three days, starting with the Wellington Dukes on Friday, Aug. 20, followed by the Kingston Voyageurs on Aug. 21 and a rematch with the Dukes on Aug. 22. Hawks' GM Tim Clayden said all roster spots are up for grabs this year. "We have over a dozen eligible veterans that can return this year. But unfortunately, we were and remain very disappointed in our undisciplined exit in last season's playoffs. All jobs are up for grabs," said Clayden. "We don't want to be talkers this season, we want to be doers and get the job done." But there was also a hint of optimism from Clayden. "We've added some tremendous talent through off-season player acquisitions," he said.

The Ontario Junior Hockey League officially released their 2010-2011 regular season schedule and conference alignment today. The 31 OJHL teams will play a 50 game schedule, with two games being played at the annual Governors Showcase weekend that will take place in Aurora October 7-11, 2010. The OJHL season will start on September 9, 2010 and end on February 13, 2011. “The OJHL is very excited about the upcoming season with all the developments that have taken place over the summer”, stated Ted Nishi, OJHL Chairman. “It has been an extremely busy summer for the league with the contraction process the league invested in this summer that has taken the league from 36 to 31 teams, the league coming back as one united group, the hiring of our first full time Commissioner, the new ownership with the Newmarket Hurricanes and the ongoing development of a new internal structure for the league.” Nishi stated. “All these are steps the league had to take to get us moving in the direction that will set us up for one of the most exciting seasons to date.” The 31 OJHL hockey clubs will compete in two conferences and four divisions. Teams will only play games within their own conference with the majority of games to be played within divisions;

The Trenton Golden Hawks Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club announce Golden Hawks announce 2010-11 Conditioning Camp & Training Camp Exhibition Schedule

Golden Hawks get rights to four players and cash for former captain Jeremy McCarty has got his wish and is headed to the Nepean Raiders of the Central Junior Hockey League. The Trenton Golden Hawks sent their former captain to Nepean for an undisclosed amount of cash plus the Ontario junior hockey playing rights to left winger Ronnie Brohman (19) from the Winchester Jr. B Hawks, centre Demetri Sakaris (20), and defencemen Brandon Boelter (20) and Lorne Miller (20), who all played for Nepean last season. "Jeremy gets his wish to be traded and I only wish him the very best," said Hawks' general manager Tim Clayden. "He has the potential to be a great player and the truth is, we have both been through a lot together, and I'd like to think we have parted on good terms. Jeremy deserves a change of scenery. McCarty had 20 goals and 40 assists in 42 games with the Hawks last season, adding three goals and seven assists in nine playoff games. "We get some pretty good players in return too and a little cash is always good to add to the war chest," Clayden said. "Both Boelter and Sakaris are top end players on any team at this level across the country. If they don't make USHL teams this fall, we expect them both to be in our line up to start the season. I think the biggest surprises in this deal will be Ronnie Brohman and Lorne Miller. Both players still have something to prove at this level and we expect that both will have their best year yet in junior hockey."
